John Scalzi’s Lock In is an interesting departure from his usually comedic style. With one of his books being from the perspective of a red shirted ensign on a space ship rather similar to the Enterprise & another one about a potential war started by someone starting an interplanetary incident by farting at someone, Lock In is a bit more serious. I’ve enjoyed all of his other books, but this one is especially good. The other thing that I find rather fun about this one is that I’m listening to it as an audiobook. When it was recorded, unlike most audiobooks, it was done in two versions. One of them was recorded by the ever-fantastic Wil Wheaton and the other by Amber Benson (who I originally knew from her role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer). I chose Ms. Benson’s reading and she is truly nailing it. Without going too much into the book (and I think that it may be more fun to go into this book without too much information, if possible), the somewhat androgynous nature of the main character makes both a female and male reading of it a REALLY neat concept and I am looking forward to someday picking up Mr. Wheaton’s version as well to see what he has to offer the story as well.
