277 - Games of War

How interesting the difference a week can make. Last Sunday night, we were getting positive fan reactions from Batman v Superman and that’s pretty much stayed consistent, but the critics... man, they must have smelled the blood in the water. I saw the movie last night & it absolutely has some massive flaws, but the critical reception has been absurd. That having been said, I don’t disagree with some of what they’re saying but I don’t think that it’s as bad as they’re making it out to be. By comparison, superhero movie to superhero movie: it was much better than Iron Man 2 (72% on Rotten Tomatoes). Yes, they’re different franchises, and in some ways we’re in a different world of superhero movies: 2010 had certainly not reached superhero saturation in a way that we now have. But there’s been a trend where the critical reaction to movies appears to be made up before they see the movie. Star Wars: Episode VII (as much as it pains me as a die-hard Star Wars nerd) had, what I would consider, plot holes and motivational absurdities on the same level of Batman v Superman, but that didn’t stop everyone from loving it with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Now, on the topic of Batman v Superman that has nothing to do with critical reception, I am VERY excited to see what the Batfleck story is. That was, by far, the most interesting thing about the movie. Granted, this is coming from someone who could not care any less about Superman in the movie or out of it, but the allusions to the world 20 years that made the Batfleck what he was in the movie was absolutely compelling and I can’t wait to find out more about it.
