181 - When Making an Omelette...
This week on ‘Tom Suggests Some Random Media Thing,’ we will be discussing thomas was alone. On the website, they describe it as “a minimalist game about friendship and jumping and floating and bouncing and anti-gravity.” It is about a series of blocks... yes, the game is pretty much populated by squares and rectangles. The hook is the simple elegance that the characterizations that these blocks bring to the game. The exuberance of John, who happily jumps around the screen, the pride that Claire finds in herself when she discovers her super power, and the pessimistic grumpiness of Chris all add to the joy that I experienced while playing the game.
I bring it up this week specifically because it just became one of the free games with Playstation+. So, if you have the service, you get it for free on your PS3 or your Vita. I’m playing it on Vita, because it just feels like a slightly more intimate experience for the game, but it is something that just needs to be experienced wherever you end up playing it. The only bummer that I endured while playing it was that I had just had some dental work done earlier in the day when I started playing it & my jaw REALLY started to hurt because I couldn’t stop smiling during my play session. I guess that if the worst thing that you can say about a game is that it made you smile until you hurt... that’s not too bad.
